My audio essay

It is essential for us to think of education. No one cannot grow without education. And to think of education is to think of the children in the future. This idea is widely spreading all over the world, including Japan. So, there are many educational reform plans in Japan such as early English teaching, compulsory dancing education and reforming entrance exam.

The TED speaker, Sir Ken Robinson, think much of human creativity, the unpredictability with it and the children’s talent. His contention is that creativity is as important in education as literacy. I agree with his state. But he said that current educational system took creativity away from children and public education kill our creativity. So we should think education over again. I don’t agree with this. Excessively competitive society is the problem, not public education system. I think that public education has more advantages than disadvantages in several points. First, public education give people the foundation for the way of thinking. Over 90% of people live along the experience in their public education. In addition to literacy, all of required subjects in the school is needed for most people. For example, office worker must use correct expression, architect must be familiar with mathematics and even dancer must understand history of the works. Certainly, Ken Robinson said, not so much people don’t teach as university professors. But they live in connection with public education in some way. Second if people provide each children with various educations, the cost of it is much more than the present situation. Our ideal is that each children is given individual education suited for their talents. But this is not economical and not practical in the point of cost and effort. It is appropriate for us to take policy for public education.

The root of this problem that we lose creativity in the course of growing is from competitive society especially in Japan. As Ken Robinson said, public education came into being to meet the need of industrialism before 19 century. This society regarded mainly efficiency as important. When people in that society pursue a profit, they want to think little of the unnecessary subject for industrialism. This idea is bad for our creativity and talent of children. Excessively industrialism is the source of evil for education.

In the future, educational system should present children various future courses and sense of value. For example, in Germany, there are mainly two future courses in the graduation elementary school; Gymnasium and Meister. While the former is usually to go to college, the latter is for craftsman. Traditionally in the country, craftsman are regarded as important as university professor. The aim of public education is to help children line up at the starting line and more independent to some extent.

My reaction about Annie

In the last lesson, Jo and I talked with Annie. Why is Annie a white girl? In the remake Annie movie, Annie is played by black girl. If Harry Potter is Asian, what do you think of it? and so on. So in this reaction, I want to talk as follows; the content of article, the story of Annie and my opinion about black Annie.

First, many people protested Annie For Target (TGT) to remove the ad. TGT is a company which partnered with the costume designer for the new Annie movie and began selling clothes like Annie’s wear. The store prepared 26 tights, jeans, dresses, shirts and accessories ranging from $4 to $30. But their ads show some of pretty white girl models. The protestors said that these misleading ad are bad for girls with various backgrounds and the company should apologize to Wallis, black Annie.

We should pay attention to what people protest. They protest that TGT’s ad is immoral, not why Annie is a black girl or a white girl.

Second, I want to review the story of Annie. In the recession around 1930, Annie is a young orphan girl who must live in a miserable orphanage run by the terrible Miss Hannigan. Her hopeless situation changes dramatically when she is selected to spend a short time at the residence of the wealthy gentleman, Oliver Warbucks. Quickly, she attracts the hearts of the household staff and even the seemingly cold-hearted Warbucks cannot help but learn to love this wonderful girl. He decides to help Annie find her long lost parents by offering a reward if they would come to him and prove their identity. However, Miss Hannigan, her evil brother, Rooster, and a female accomplice, plan to impersonate those people to get the reward for themselves. Their trial result to fail and Annie is adopted by Warbucks as happy end after she noticed that her parents had died several years before.

This is the short summary. I have not seen this musical and only know the famous song “tomorrow”. I would like to watch both classic musical and remake movie.

Third, my opinion about this article is for petitioners. That is because their principle is valuable and should be sticked for every part such as ad. This remake is revolutionary for recently racism. In the past, the days of fierce racism, I cannot imagine that the original musical with a white girl heroine is remaked with a black girl. The challengeof remake is should be appreciated. But TGT lacked careful consideration. Usually, fashion model is played by white people. This company obsessed by the notion. The real aim should be fashion for various races and they should employ diverse type of models.

This I Believe

This I believe is the spirit of hungry. Originally, this word comes from the mental condition that people try to do something for their life in order to eat. Although, this word is used widely today, I think that the hungry spirit consists of two parts, the infinite desire to improve oneself and never giving up whatever happens.

When I was a high school student, I dedicated myself to tennis club activity. Because I have played tennis since 13 years, I lacked in a lot of experience at that time and I made up for it in effort. After school, I took part in club activity every day and did hard training in order to become a regular member. I had an infinite desire to improve my performance. But I injured my right wrist during the game for selecting regular members, so I cannot participated in a Spring Tokyo Tennis Tournament. I was very disappointedin the result and watched the tournament as a cheering member. When the players in my school were defeated in quarterfinal, I was also frustrated. At the same time, I decided to take revenge as a player in the next match. Although I did not cure the pain in right wrist, I started to do training such as running and watching several tennis players on the Internet. After completely recovery, I did my best for win. Thanks to hard work, I become a regularmember for summer tournament. Under severe circumstance, I had the tie record finally in our tennis club. This is never giving up whatever happens.

In Japan, it is said that many young people are getting passive, reserved and satisfied with their surroundings. I think that this trend is not good for Japan to survive in this world. There are a lot of literally hungry people in this world and they made an effort desperately to eat much and get much money and higher position. They have the real hungry spirit. If Japanese people live peacefully as they are, we will fall into the poor. I experienced the success with the hungry spirit and young people in Japan face the challenge without it. So, I believe the spirit of hungry.

My reaction about poaching elephants

In the last lesson, our group picked up the topic about apartheid. It was very meaningful for me to study the history on discrimination in Africa. But in the last half of lesson, our teacher Damon gave us some challenging problems, the part of which is about the trade in illicit ivory. So, I would like to talk about ivory.

First of all, what is it ivory?  Since the past, people have been processing ivory and making several products such as musical instruments, craftworks and especially personal seals in Japan. But in Japan, most ivory is imported and China is also big buyer in the world. On the other hand, main exporters are African countries. Cote d’ivoire ,which beated Japan in the World Cup, is one of the largest exporters. That country has another name, Ivory Coast, which means it has been exporting ivory by the ships.

Since 1989, the Washington Treaty has been reducing the trade on ivory. It was held because a lot of elephants was killed by hunters and many people feared that elephants would became extinct. This talks decided to take measures to number each elephants. In that time, the main measure is grasp the numbers of the elephants but that was not succeeded.

I think that poaching elephants is deeper problem. The hunters in Africa want to earn money because of the lack of legal profitable labor. And they also give some profit local people. That’s because killing elephants links to saving their crops and houses from them. Local people are afraid of being damaged by elephants and have been fighting against them. In this topic, several stances are involved. It is bad to takikng a stopgap measure can resolve the complex problem.

Reaction about Ireland’s smoking ban

March 29 marked the 10 years anniversary of a workplace smoking ban in Ireland, extending to pubs and restaurants. Ireland was the first country worldwide to enact such a sweeping ban. The sweeping ban has spawned copycat law across the globe.

Some people think it as success, because smoking ban is saving lives and improving our overall health as a nation. In fact, the smoking prevalence rate has decreased more than 7% since the launch of the ban.

But other people think it as the opposite effect.  They say the ban has helped smoking more, that’s because everyone was smoking outside, you’d take one. The ban make people smoking outside, not inside. So, there are more chance to see people smoking outside.

In this article, one of the way to stop people smoking is to make smoking illegal, punishable by a fine of up to 3,000euros, or about$4,200.

I think there are two other ways for it, tax and package.

First, raising tax on a cigarette is effective. It is more effective than a fine to collect people’s money and treat justly. Smoking outside is not necessary punished by police, so the lucky is safe!

Second, packages on cigarette cases are also important. In Japan, many announces is written on them, for example risk for lung cancer and several bad effects for our health.  This doesn’t make people buy a lot of cigarettes.

There are many ways to prevent people from smoking too much.
