Hi, my name is Yuri, my name is Natsuko, welcome to this country spotlight. We would like to introduce Algeria to you on the show. Algeria is very big territory and desert. We will be talking about a few basic facts, some history, climate and food. Let’s start.


History of Algeria

First I will talk about history of Algeria. In 1830, France went into Algeria. The army of Algeria made a strong stand but in 1870, all Algeria was dominated by France. After that, they raised an independence movement and in 1954, Algeria war broke out. Finally,they became independent.From 1992, terrorism started and there have been many victims in Algeria. If you want to go there, be careful.

Climate and geography

Most country of Algeria is desert and dryness plain. Mediterranean coast has a lot of rainfall and grassland is expanding. About 95% people of Algerians live there. Capital of Algeria, Algers and Niigata are same latitude and earthquake often happen. Northern Mediterranean coast is the temperate zone. Summer’s average temperature is often 20 to 25 degrees and winter is 10 to 15 degrees, but day and night’s temperature is very difference, so it can be difficult for Japanese people.

Traditional foods

Algerian cuisine is a mix of Berber, Arab, and Turkish. It is related to Algerian history. Famous food is Couscous that is steamed tiny grains of bough wheat. It is also eated in other African countries, Europe, and Brazil. Couscous dishes are made with meat and vegetables.By the tradition of Berber, Algerian people often eat lamb. Boil, grill, there are many styles. Especially, Mechoui that is grilled over charcoal is very famous.
