“Smørrebrød” means “butter and bread”.  It consists of a piece of buttered rye bread or dark brown bread. The toppings are homemade cold cuts, pieces of meat or fish, cheese or spread. A slice or two of topping is placed on the buttered bread, and then decorated with the right accompaniments, to create tasty and visually appealing food items.
